Keeping your engine in tip-top condition is an important part of car maintenance, and a good oil filter is essential for engine health. Quite simply, the oil filter cleans the oil that’s circulating in the engine, and helps to catch any large particles before they cause damage to the vehicle.

The oil filter also protects the engine by retaining just a small amount of oil once the engine has been turned off, so there’s sufficient lubrication when the car is started again. Without a functioning oil filter, you’re likely to run into many problems with the general running of your car, so it pays to make sure that the part is maintained and kept in good working order.

Changing an oil filter is a simple job that you can carry out yourself, though a professional at a garage will be able to help for a reasonable fee. Take care when removing the old filter, as it’ll have hot oil inside.
