What to look for when buying used rims

As most readers will agree, we all love alloy wheels.

Whether factory options or custom designs, alloy wheels are a vital modification for the appearance of a vehicle. Whilst most would recommend purchasing new custom wheels from the likes of us at LK Performance, a growing number are opting to purchase a set of shiny wheels from the second hand market.

Whilst there is a significantly higher risk of purchasing custom wheels in this manner, certain precautions can be exercised to ensure minimal risk for all road users.

Stick to our guide and you'll be on the road to making significant savings.

Condition

Like purchasing any used item on the internet or otherwise, inspecting the general condition is key. Whilst minor cracks can be repaired, purchasing wheels with these minor fractures would be ill advised. Even more so if your potential purchase has become buckled, which can cause vibrations and further damage over the long term. Of course minor buckles can also be repaired and balanced, however buyers should certainly beware of the potential cost of saving a few Pounds.

Aesthetically, try to avoid items with evidence of curbing, as the appearance will be greatly affected by the damage. Unless you are handy with wheel refurbishment, it may be worth shopping around or even purchasing new.

Genuine Article?

If our products are superheroes in the car modification scene, some cheaper imitation brands often mask themselves as villains. Many fake alloy wheels have flooded the market in recent years, particularly knocking off premium German brand alloys. Be vigilant and check for part numbers and cross reference with proven genuine articles.

If the price is right and the wheels are in great condition, they can obviously make a great bargain addition to your vehicle. However many in the industry will, rightly so, recommend for you to splash a little extra cash instead of paddling in the sea of bargain basement counterfeits.

Tyres

Sometimes used offerings will come fitted with tyres already. In which case, a thorough inspection must become a priority. The UK legal limit requires that a tyre must maintain a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across 3/4 of the tyre's entire circumference, so be sure to ask sellers to specify exact measurements at the first point of contact. Also be sure to check for punctures, bulges and general wear and tear. The condition of the tyres can greatly affect the value of the wheels in question.

Bare all of this in mind, and be sure to research tyre prices online to weigh out whether the used items are as worthwhile as they may appear.

Specification

Prior to checking the above, a buyer must be sure to research thoroughly to ensure that any potential wheels will fit onto the desired vehicle with minimal fuss. Owners' clubs and forums offer rich information regarding this matter and will cater for most types of vehicles. Be prepared to pay extra for the likes of wheel bolts and spacers if required. The legal term "Buyer Beware" certainly comes into play here as the seller shall assume no responsibility if you've failed to carry out your research. In a nutshell, ask as many questions as you can before burning any rubber.

Point of purchase

As with any used item, buyers only have a limited number or rights. Thankfully, those who choose to purchase used wheels on eBay are covered by their terms and conditions if an item is not as described or fit for purpose. However most other outlets would require a lengthy and often fruitless avenue down the Small Claims Court to receive any reimbursement for such problems. So be sure to ask as many questions as possible and request photographic evidence for all of the above points to check.

The internet is unfortunately laden with scammers, so be sure to exercise caution here too. Never send cash by post or payment as a gift via PayPal, as the comeback will be minimal should the item turn out to be the work of fiction. Purchasing from reputable sellers on forums should also be mandatory, as many criminals tend to target these sites to scam bargain hunters. As previously mentioned, collection in person would also be recommended with cash on collection. Try to bring a friend if the location seems suspect though and only make payment when satisfied that they fit your requirements. Otherwise opt for a reputable courier service which tracks your delivery.

To have or not to have?

There are no objections from anyone for seeking out the best bargain when searching for customised wheels, and used items need not be such a liability. Genuine bargains are to be had and shall remain without trouble, however our genuine recommendation is to save a little extra cash and purchase new from reputable dealers. Not only will your wheels be brand new and shiny, but you will also benefit from guarantees and the safety net of consumer laws.
