5 Ways to Prepare for a Banger Rally

Posted on: 30/10/2014

Growing numbers of motorists are fascinated by banger rallies. The idea of purchasing a cheap banger, joining other like-minded maniacs and enjoying a Top Gear style road trip over a great distance is certainly appealing.

The parties, the adventure and the money raised for charity creates a recipe for fun like no other, and memories that shall last a life time.

Whether it's the Wacky Rally's Barmy to Barcelona, the Ramshackle Rally to Munich or the Banger Rally to the unfortunately named city of Pula; the potential for the trip of a lifetime is closer within your grasp than ever before. Besides cash, beer and a superb sense of humour, what else is required for the average banger rally? LK Performance aims to find out.

1. The Car

Different organisations will certainly create their own requirements. However, most will agree to purchasing a road legal car for a stupidly small budget. For example, the Wacky Rally requires that entrants spend no more than £300 for their comedic chariot. Ebay is usually the best source of bargain motors due to the auction format. Strive to search for something with an MOT which will last the duration of the rally, even if your plan is to dispose of it immediately upon completing the challenge. Take into account any repairs which need to be made, for example new tyres which can be purchased from us.

A quick browse on the internet auction site has produced several possible results, including; a '95 Vauxhall Calibra, a '01 Toyota Corolla, a '00 Ford Focus, a '90 Citroen BX, a '99 Peugeot 306 Cabriolet and a '92 Toyota MR2. Your choice will ultimately depend on your requirements, how many people will attend your team and how much you plan to burn on fuel.

2. Decoration

Banger rally combatants shall not simply purchase a car and tackle the rally in the original paint work. No sir, the rules state that one has to look completely ridiculous to take part. The best strategy is to either decide a theme prior to purchasing the vehicle, or otherwise selecting another tailor made for your banger. This can usually be resolved with a visit to the local hardware shop to purchase some tins of paint.

Some will even opt for props on their cars. Whilst a line has to be drawn with regards to the law and practicality, banger rally competitors have been known to create rather extravagant pieces. One team in a Volvo V40 was spotted in Barcelona earlier this year covered in fur, like a dog. Others have been entered with sails attached to mimic a pirate ship.

3. Documents and the law

Yes, banger rallies are intended to be fun, but there are some mandatory legal requirements to tend to prior to setting off. Firstly, you will need the registration documents to hand throughout the journey. Foreign police will demand to see this document if/ when you get pulled over. Also be sure that road tax has been paid prior to starting the rally. Even outside of the UK, it is an offence to drive without valid British road tax. As mentioned before, a valid MOT is compulsory throughout, and will also provide better peace of mind that your banger won't kick the proverbial bucket in the middle of rural France.

Insurance is another river to be crossed on this trip. Many specialist providers will offer insurance over a limited period of time, which would be suitable for those taking part. Make sure that any other drivers appear as named drivers on the policy to avoid any legal headaches if the worst should happen. Smart drivers will also purchase European breakdown cover, this can only be deemed sensible due to the budget involved.

Some rallies will offer vehicle disposal at the end of the course. Otherwise, please research your own alternatives prior to setting off.

4. Accommodation and alcohol

Many rallies will provide the opportunity to group book accommodation across various stages of the course. Some may not though, so the best option is to research prior to setting off. Campsites, hostels and budget hotels offer inexpensive over-night hoarding. Sleeping in your own vehicle is at your own peril though. Many countries, including Spain and France, forbid sleeping in public inside a vehicle or wild camping, and will result in an extortionate fine. Couple this with a £300 Rover 800 coloured in fluorescent pink and the gendarmerie will undoubtedly be none-too-pleased.

Do not be tempted to drink and drive either, as the consequences will be harsh. By all means join the parties, but arrange one of your crew to go T-total for the night so to drive away sober in the morning.

5. Charity

Raise lots and lots of cash for charity. Besides the fun and epic shenanigans, there is a point to this madness. Be sure to pester friends to donate, encourage your boss to sponsor you and Crowdfund the adventure however possible.
